It is a dedicated airport train operated by Trenitalia and runs directly between:

The scheduled journey is about 32 minutes, tickets currently cost €14, and departures are generally scheduled every 15 minutes. Trenitalia also offers a mini-group deal where four Leonardo Express tickets can currently be purchased together for €40 rather than €56.

Four individual tickets would normally total €56, although Trenitalia’s current mini-group offer lowers the cost to €40. At that point, comparing the train with a €55 official taxi can make sense—especially when you consider the additional metro, taxi or walking journey from Termini to your hotel.

Where Do I Find the Leonardo Express at Fiumicino?

The railway station is located inside the airport complex.

After collecting your luggage, follow signs displaying Train / Treni / Railway Station.

You do not need to travel into Fiumicino town first.

Important First-Timer Tip

Don’t assume your normal Rome public transportation ticket covers the airport express.

Trenitalia specifically states that integrated Metrebus tickets are not valid on the Leonardo Express.

If your accommodation is in Trastevere, for example, there is little benefit in taking the Leonardo Express all the way to Termini and then traveling back across Rome.

The current official Roma Capitale predetermined taxi tariff from Fiumicino Airport to locations within the Aurelian Walls is €55 per journey, not per passenger.

From Ciampino Airport to within the Aurelian Walls, the predetermined fare is currently €40.

That’s an important distinction.

If four people share a €55 Fiumicino taxi, the cost works out to about €13.75 each—almost the same as one Leonardo Express ticket—while the taxi takes you directly to your accommodation.
